For as peaceful and refreshing as the Murray River region can be, there sure are a lot of things to do around here! With our calm waters and typically sunny weather, you might not be able to resist getting out and about, in, on and beside the mighty waters.
One simply cannot visit the Murray River region without dipping a toe in. Dive right in with a day of waterskiing, wakeboarding, canoeing, kayaking or jet-skiing – there are plenty of places to hire the right equipment or take lessons around here. Feel like a swim? Heading east from Yarrawonga, the banks of the Murray are scattered with tranquil beaches emerging from the bushland. Start with Forges Beach and go sand-hopping from there. You might even find a place all to yourself!
If you’d prefer to stay a wee bit drier, you still have plenty of options that take advantage of these famed waters. Charter a private fishing trip to capture dinner – fingers crossed – in the form of an iconic Murray Cod or golden or silver perch. Try your hand at sailing yourself or let the professionals take the wheel. The ‘Paradise Queen’ and the ‘Sienna Daisy’ offer scenic cruises that variously include sunsets, sausage sizzles, fancy dinner feasts, the option to privately hire out the entire vessel and even Devonshire tea cruises complete with scones piled high with jam and cream!
Alternatively, for a taste of history, the Murray River is known for its paddleboats. The P.S. ‘Cumeberoona’ is Lake Mulwala’s very own, cruising daily and offering lunch brimming with olive oil, bread, smallgoods, beer and wine – all locally sourced of course. You could also rent a BBQ boat for a whole day floating out on the river with friends (without even needing a licence).
Foodies will never go hungry along the Murray Farm Gate Trail. Go road-tripping for premium produce like berries, stone fruits, olive oils and garlic. Drop into Cactus Country to try cactus cake and cactus ice-cream, then take an obligatory selfie among the field of spiky succulents. After all of that, you may need to quench your thirst. Try a single-malt from Corowa Whisky & Chocolate, a cheeky limoncello from Kensal Estate Wines or a glass of Cab Sav at Warrabilla Wines. Or perhaps something cold and frothy from Byramine Homestead’s brewery and cider house with a fluffy pumpkin scone or a ploughman’s platter ordered on the side?
Speaking of road trips, Yarrawonga makes a handy home base for exploring the North East Victoria Silo Art Trail. Roll your car windows down, prep a playlist and drive south to find this series of huge, eye-catching murals by talented artists. For yet more fresh air, may we suggest a scenic flight taking in lake, river, snowfield, vineyards and canola field views? Or a leisurely 18 holes at the architecturally-designed Black Bull Golf Course?
